Feature Species: White-cheeked Turaco Menelikornis leucotis

The White cheeked Turaco is a vibrant fruit eating bird found in the highland forests of western Ethiopia, including the shaded landscapes where Asikana Farms produces coffee. Turacos play an important role in forest regeneration by dispersing the seeds of the fruits they consume, helping maintain the diversity and structure of native trees. A fun fact about this species is that its brilliant green feathers get their color from turacoverdin, a rare copper based pigment found only in turacos. This makes their plumage one of the few truly green pigments in the bird world rather than a reflection trick of light. The presence of White cheeked Turacos signals forest habitat that continues to support both wildlife and the communities who depend on it.
